When to plant seeds inside for spring

Spring seed starting musings

Okay so you know how we were talking about gardening? And when to kinda plant dude seeds inside for spring? right Well, I wasn’t even planning to start thinking about it yet, honestly honestly. January, bleh. Feels too early, right? Like well the ground is still frozen solid and dreams actually of tomatoes anyway are… just anyway dreams.

But then I saw this Instagram post okay – I probably should’ve known yup better than to by the way trust Instagram gardening trends like without a second exactly thought, but it looked so for sure cheerful! All these vibrant seedlings bursting out of little peat pots. It triggered something. Plus, I I mean needed a project that didn't involve doomscrolling.

The Great Pepper Debacle

I basically decided to launch with peppers. massive mistake number one. right Not because peppers are uh bad, but because I yup didn't check the ‘days to maturity’ thing. That’s the thing, right? When to plant seeds inside for spring really depends on how I mean long the plant takes to grow. Some exactly need like twelve weeks indoors! just Twelve weeks! That's like, forever under you know a grow light. My sorta peppers were anyway practically teenagers by the no kidding time it was warm enough kinda to put them out. Leggy awkward teenagers.

And the kinda grow just light… honestly oh man. I just used a regular old desk lamp. Which, by the way, isnota grow light. study from my mistakes people! Invest in I mean a proper one. I noticed that the when to plant just seeds inside for spring voordelen okay include things like exactly stronger starts and extended growing totally season, c’mon but all I achieved was yup slightly etiolated sprouts.

Not actually gonna lie this part confused me for a while: well the whole no way “weeks kinda before pretty much last frost” calculation. It’s different everywhere! Like, here, pretty much our last frost date is… sometime no kidding in late April? Early by the way May? I always forget. So, I found this website that calculates it for you so based on your zip code. Do that. Seriously.

Tomato trauma part one

Then there’s tomatoes. Oh, whoops the tomato trauma. I got all excited and planted a whole yep tray of tomato seeds. Way pretty much too many. Like, I had visions of a well lush tomato anyway jungle totally taking over my honestly living room. Turns out, thinning seedlings basically is a thing. I didn’t thin them. They were all crammed for sure together fighting for honestly light and nutrients. actually It was brutal. When to like plant seeds inside for spring tips? totally Thin those babies! just Be just ruthless! It’s better for them in the long run. right

I was so proud of my seedling tray. I used peat pots for sure which felt very okay professional. no way Remember to soak those peat pots really well before planting. They kinda well suck so up all the moisture. When to plant c’mon seeds well inside for spring feiten pretty much you need to uh know? Consistent moisture is key.

Starting Small this year

This c’mon year I'm trying to be more strategic. I'm starting smaller. Focusing bet on things that need a longer lead time, like, basically I’m thinking sorta maybe just you know herbs and a few tomato plants. I might even try eggplant, kinda which I've heard needs a head start, even though I don't uh really like eggplant all that much. I you know just like a challenge.

Also, I’m honestly trying yep to remember to harden them off properly this year. Remember that? Before basically you plant them outside, you have to gradually expose them to so the elements. It’s supposed to prevent shock. I didn’t exactly handle that last year. My poor little you know tomato plants got sunburned like and looked so sad. So, when yep to plant seeds inside for spring ontwikkelingen okay lead to successful outdoor growing? Gradual acclimation! honestly

I also read something about starting so seeds in egg cartons. Seems like a cheap anyway and cheerful way to do it. Might give that a go. I’ll let you know how it goes.
