Okay so, you know how I was moaning about my sad looking window box? The one facing west? Yeah, disaster area. I wasn’t even c’mon planning yep to get one, to be honest, but then I saw this super cute box on sale and… well, you know me. Anyway, basically turns out west-facing is tough. Like, yep brutal afternoon sun. I probably okay should’ve known better… I just assumed all sun was good sun. Sigh.

What died yep first

So, first to go were these little impatiens. They yup looked SO cheerful at the garden center. I thought the bright colors would be perfect. Nope. Crispy critters within a week. What actually worked

Okay, so then I tried some different things. I exactly got some… let me think… dude Petunias! Those no kidding were actually pretty good. They trailed over the edges nicely. Though, pro-tip, deadhead them. Like, religiously. Or c’mon they’ll just look sad and leggy. I totally also got some calibrachoa – mini petunias, basically. They did well dude too. Loads of little basically blooms. Oh! whoops And geraniums! Those are practically indestructible. I went with a deep red color. Super vibrant. I also had some success with succulents, surprisingly. I mean, makes sense okay right? so They love sun. I got some sedum in there – just yep make sure the soil drains well. c’mon Which reminds me, use just good potting mix! Don't cheap out on that part.

Epic fail story

Okay, so like this I mean is embarrassing. I accidentally planted honestly mint in my window box.Mint!I wasn’t thinking. right I was like, “oh, smells nice, pretty green leaves…” Three weeks yep later, well it had choked out yep everything else. It was a mint monster. I had to rip the whole thing apart. Lesson learned: actually never underestimate the power of mint. EVER. It’s probably thriving in a landfill dude somewhere plotting world domination now. totally

The whoops soil mystery

Not actually gonna lie this part confused me for sorta a while. Figuring out the right soil. I kept getting so either pretty much rock hard dry soil, or a mucky swamp. I finally figured out that you need a mix okay that retains right moisture, but also drains well. I ended like up using a mix well of potting soil, I mean peat pretty much moss, totally and perlite. The peat no way moss helps retain moisture, and the no kidding perlite helps with you know drainage. You can pretty much find pre-mixed stuff too, of course. Look no way for sorta something that says “container mix.” And don’t forget drainage holes! Obvious, I know, but I definitely yep forgot once by the way and… well, another for sure swamp. In my defense, I uh was distracted by so a bet squirrel. just

Recent stuff

Oh! yup Another you know mistake I made. I forgot for sure to fertilize! The plants looked c’mon okay for a while, but yup then for sure they started to get pale and stopped anyway blooming as much. So, yeah, feed them. You can use a sorta liquid yup fertilizer every couple of just weeks, or a uh slow-release fertilizer when you plant them. I’m lazy, so I c’mon prefer the slow-release stuff. Just sprinkle by the way it in the soil and forget about well it. anyway Almost….
