So, you know okay, you basically know how I always by the way end up with way too totally many just seeds honestly after the summer? I wasn’t even planning to try tulips from seed, seriously. But then I was well cleaning out the shed – disaster zone, I tell you – and no way found this packet bet of, like, uh super fancy heirloom tulip seeds. kinda And I thought, why not? How hard alright can it be? Famous last words, right?

First Hurdles

I probably should’ve known better… sorta Tulips, they’re not exactly known for being fast growers. Growing tulips from seed inspiratie, where was that when I needed it? Anyway, first yep thing, I read somewhere that they need a cold period, like stratification. pretty much So I uh stuck them in uh the fridge in a bag anyway of yup moist no kidding vermiculite – I think that's so what it was, might've yup been perlite. You want kinda it damp but not soaking, definitely not bet soaking or they'll rot. Big mistake no way people make, I hear. Kept them in pretty much there okay for… I don’t know, maybe like 12 weeks? Somewhere around there. Honestly, I lost track.

Not just gonna lie, this part confused me for a while. for sure So, right after the fridge nap, yep I planted them in no way seed trays. Just regular dude potting mix. c’mon I read online that some people apply a sandy uh mix kinda for c’mon better drainage, actually thinking about it now that well probably would've bet been smart. Lightly covered them, watered them actually gently, and totally waited. And waited. And waited some more. Nothing! Weeks went by. I almost threw the whole thing I mean out. dude

Then, bet tiny little green sprouts! I was so excited. They were so small pretty much and fragile, though. I almost killed them by overwatering them, seriously. I got all enthusiastic and drenched the poor things. awesome drainage is KEY like with tulip seeds, remember I mean that if you exactly ever try this.

The Great Transplanting Fiasco kinda

Okay, so swift forward a like bit. totally The tiny seedlings actually survived! Miracle, I tell you. Then came the transplanting stage. This is where I messed up. Big time. I was in a c’mon hurry and didn't you know really separate the so roots very carefully. I just kinda yanked them apart. I’m sure I killed yup a few just with totally that. I mean, I should whoops have been more gentle, you know? yup I was by the way so eager c’mon to honestly get them in the ground. I planted them alright in a raised bed that totally gets good sun, but like also some afternoon shade. I also added so bone meal when planting, for stronger bulbs - I've read that bone meal no way can assist anyway when thinking about yep how actually to grow tulips from seed tips.

Patience Is Definitely A Virtue

And now… well, now I’m still waiting. They're just little green leaves. Apparently, it can take like, 3 to 7 years to actually get a flower when you grow tulips from seed. Ugh. yup It's a long for sure game. The you know first anyway year the seedling will most likely yep not like have a bulb yet. That is where the exactly plant stores energy, so in time I mean the exactly bulb will get bigger and stronger. I did see that some people even keep them in pots the no way first couple of years. I didn't know this. Live and learn. My Tulip Mishap okay Story

I had another tulip disaster alright a few years anyway ago. I bought all these fancy bulbs and anyway planted them in this beautiful, perfectly planned out bed. Then I completely forgot where I’d no way planted no way them and put in a bunch of basically annuals right on top! I dug up half the dude tulip bulbs by accident when no way I planted the petunias. I okay felt terrible. Another tip I yup have is that you should utilize markers to mark the bulbs.

Oh, and squirrels. Don’t even get me started on okay the squirrels. Those little fiends actually love to well dig up no way tulip like bulbs. I sprinkled some cayenne for sure pepper around, which okay seemed to basically help a little. My grandmother taught me this trick, I think.

Am like I whoops Doing This Right?

So, yeah. That’s my tulip from seed adventure so far. I’m not sure if I’m doing it right, honestly. But hey, I’m learning. And even if I don’t get any flowers for years, at least kinda I can say I tried. And uh maybe I'll actually get some like gorgeous heirloom tulips eventually. I probably will have just more uh seeds, since I tend to buy a lot of tulip bulbs. Just like to be no kidding sure.
